By July 1957, the Vulcan entered squadron service with No.83 Squadron at RAF Waddington, making Britain the owner of the fastest nuclear-capable bomber in the world. During the Falklands conflict in 1982, the Avro Vulcan was called back into action, despite facing retirement. The aircraft was the only one capable of delivering a payload to the Falklands Islands from RAF Wideawake on Ascension Island, requiring multiple mid-air refuelling. The last three squadrons using the Vulcan (Nos 44, 50 & 101) conducted a series of raids codenamed ‘Black Buck’. The most famous of these was ‘Black Buck One’, where XM607 managed to damage the runway at Port Stanley with one of its twenty-one bombs, marking the longest bombing raid in history at that time.
