The UK ordered 127 Challenger 2 tanks in 1991, followed by an additional 259 in 1994. Oman also placed orders for 18 tanks in 1993 and 20 more in 1997. The tank entered service with the British Army in June 1998, with the last of the 386 units delivered by April 2002. Deliveries to Oman were completed in 2001.
