The Wellington: A Pivotal British Bomber The Wellington was the most important British bomber of the initial war period. The prototype first flew in June 1936, with deliveries to RAF bomber squadrons commencing in 1939. It operated from various bases during the war, including Great Britain, India, the Middle East, North Africa, and Italy. Although it appeared modern, the Wellington was technologically a product of an earlier era. By 1942, its slow speed, limited ceiling, and small bomb load rendered it obsolete in the European theatre. However, it continued to serve in other roles until the war’s end, including use as a trainer by the RAF until 1953. A total of 11,461 Wellingtons of all variants were built, making it the most produced British bomber design.
